Charango FAQ
The questions every new charanguista asks sooner or later — answered short and straight.
Questions, Answered
- What actually is a rasgueo?
- A fixed repeating stroke pattern — down or up, every fretted course at once, rests included, one bar at a time — raked across a chord shape. It is how a charango states harmony: instead of holding the chord and letting it ring, the whole hand crosses it in rhythm. The cell pages show three of them with every stroke and pitch derived from the tuning, not typed by hand.
- Why GCEAE? What do the open courses spell?
- The five open courses' pitch classes spell an A minor seventh — G, C, E and A together, root-agnostically detected rather than assumed. That is the chord this instrument answers on before a single fret is touched. The fretboard explorer lights the fact up in one tap.
- What is the "twin E" everyone mentions?
- Two of the five courses are tuned to the same note, E, exactly an octave apart — one near the middle of the hand, one at the far end. Every chord voicing on the site reports whether that pair still agrees an octave apart or has split once a fret changes one of them, and the daily chord tracks it every single day.
- The courses are doubled — why do the diagrams show five strings?
- A charango carries ten strings in five pairs, traditionally with the middle course strung in octaves, and each pair is fretted and struck as one. The diagrams draw the pair as a single course because that is how your hands treat it — the doubling changes the shimmer, never the fingering.
- I play guitar. Will my chords work here?
- Your left hand will settle in quickly — the chord pages chart every shape with frets and fingers named against the real GCEAE courses. The genuinely new part is the right hand's job: a guitar mostly states harmony with a held strum, and a charango turns the same shape into a fast alternating rasgueo across all five courses. Learn the huayño cell before anything else and the instrument starts making sense.
- Is any of this paid?
- No. Every chart, cell table, drill, and tool on Charango Warrior is free, with no ads and no account.
